Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (NAOMS), is a professional association that aims to meet the needs of its members and the public in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. It is a voluntary non-profit organisation. |
The Association, which began in 1994 with just a handful of doctors, has grown with over a hundred members both within the country and abroad. It has affiliation with bodies in the country like Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, the Nigeria Medical Association, and the Nigerian Dental Association, and international bodies including the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS).
NAOMS aims at high standards and ethics in the clinical practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, enhancing communication and cooperation between surgeons in various institutions within and outside Nigeria, and the integration of the specialisation into the National Health Care Delivery system and the National Health Insurance Scheme. They also organise seminars and conferences towards the advancement of the Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries, and defects in the jaws, mouth, teeth and facial regions of the body. Thus, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons treat accident victims who sustain facial injuries, people who need reconstructive surgeries or those who desire such surgeries for cosmetic purposes.
They help children with birth defects such as those of poorly shaped jaws and adults with wisdom teeth problems. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons care for patients with facial pain, poorly aligned jaws and cancer. |
