Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (NAOMS) is a national professional association that aims to meet the needs of its members and the public in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. It is a voluntary non-profit organization.

The Association, which began in 1994 with just a handful of doctors, has grown with over a hundred members both within the country and abroad. It has affiliation with bodies in the country such as;

  • Nigeria Medical Association (NMA),

  • Nigerian Dental Association (NDA) and

  • Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN).

 

 

It also has affiliation with international bodies such as;

  • International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) and

  • African Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).

NAOMS aims at high standards and ethics in the clinical practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, enhancing communication and cooperation between surgeons in various institutions within and outside Nigeria, and the integration of the specialisation into the National Health Care Delivery system and the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The association also organises seminars and conferences towards the advancement of the Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.

What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty of Dentistry that deals with disorders in the oral and maxillofacial regions, taking cognisance of function and aesthetics. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries, and defects in the jaws, mouth, teeth and facial regions of the body.

 

 
           
           
         
         
  What are Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons involved in?      
 
 
 
  • Diagnosis and treatment of soft and hard tissue trauma of the oral and maxillofacial region (mandibular and maxillary fractures, zygomatic bone fractures, nasal fractures, midfacial fractures).

  • Diagnosis and treatment of oral and facial infections.

  • Dentoalveolar surgery - surgery to remove impacted teeth, difficult tooth extractions, extractions on medically compromised patients, bone grafting or preprosthetic surgery to provide better anatomy for the placement of implants, dentures, or other dental prostheses.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of benign pathology such as facial soft tissue lesions, jaw cysts, tumours etc.
 
  • Diagnosis and treatment of oral, head and neck cancer (ablative and reconstructive surgery, microsurgery).

  • Diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous malignancy (skin cancer), lip reconstruction.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of congenital craniofacial malformations such as cleft lip and palate.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of chronic facial pain disorders.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

  • Cosmetic facial surgery
